Orphan
Situation - Over 800,000 orphans due mainly
to the AIDS Pandemic sweeping Zambia. Other causes for
the large number of orphans are: poverty, war in the
surrounding countries. Majority of orphans cared for
by the extended families. Over 200,000 orphans without
extended family to care for them. Over 23,000 orphans
in critical need of care.
ICC
is challenged to help - In
1998 an ICC team visited a number of African countries
and following this visit, Zambia was chosen as the first
place in Africa for ICC to commence a Children’s Country
Home Campus. In 1999 plans were laid with the ADRA Zambian
Welfare Department. In 2000, 25 hectares of good agricultural
land, bordered by two rivers, at Mupapa, 200 kilometers
north of Lusaka, was granted to ICC to commence the
program. The Mupapa clinic and school are on adjoining
property. The first volunteer team began the first home
for children and restored another home on the property
to be used as an administration home. In 2001 the first
home and necessary infrastructure was completed and
children accepted into the program. ICC is currently
continuing to develop the Children’s Country Home Village,
as funds are available. Cottage home family care is
being provided for orphans without extended family support.
The orphan children attend the Mupapa School situated
on the adjoining property.

Development
for Self Sufficiency - Educational and vocational
training enables orphans to become self sufficient and
contributing citizens. Development of small industries
assists with operational costs and also provides vocational
training. A large agricultural program, when fully developed,
will provide food, agricultural training and operational
expenses

Profile, Dinah - Dinah and her brother
joined our ICC family in May, 2002. She and her
brother and other young family members were orphaned,
due to the AIDS pandemic. The only family member
who would help them was their 17 year old aunt
Rachel. She worked in the local market to make
enough money to feed them and herself one meal
a day. They were living in a tiny mud brick hut
in a dangerous shantytown, and used rags to keep
themselves warm at night.
They prayed that God would take care of them.
He answered their prayers and sent help through
ICC. Dinah was initially treated for various infections,
but she currently has no serious health problems.
She is a very sweet, timid child who needs a lot
of hugs. |
