Orphan
Situation - In Cambodia, thousands of children
are left without homes and familys as a result of the
“Killing Fields”, civil war, poverty, illness and HIV
AIDS. The orphans, along with thousands of other Cambodians,
camped under plastic on the border for many month
The
Beginnings - In July 1997 ICC began caring
for 12 orphans in a home at Samrong, close to the Thai
/ Cambodia border. In early 1997 a second home, bathroom
and kitchen facilities were constructed and the number
of orphans cared for grew to 20.
Finally the orphans were transferred to Phnom Penh
and lived there for the rest of the school year. In
1997 ICC began looking for a new safer site for the
development of a Children’s Country Home Campus. ICC
rented a home in Kampong Thom, central Cambodia, and
30 more orphans joined the program. In 1998 ICC purchased
20 hectares of land at Khompong Thmar, about 30 kilometres
from Kampong Thom. Volunteer teams came to construct
the first home on the new site.
